On the 10th of September 2020, SIB’s Committee of Intellectual Activities (CIA) will organize the first online lecture of the new academic year! Every month the CIA touches upon another, often hot, topic with interesting speakers. We are happy to welcome both SIB members and prospective members!
For this special event, we will celebrate the 75th birthday of the world’s largest and most important international organisation: the United Nations! However, as every birthday celebration has grumpy uncles, also the UN is not favored by everyone. As corona is sweeping around the world, multiple heads of large states strongly criticize multilateralism. In this globalized world, we question ourselves how relevant the UN still is, 75 years after its establishment.
We will answer this and other questions with two interesting speakers: Karel van Oosterom, the former Dutch representative in the UN Security Council and current ambassador to the UK, and Mert Kumru, current Dutch UN Youth representative for Human Rights and Security. Both speakers will give their view on the topic we will be discussing, and explore the role of the UN in the lives of everyone including students in Amsterdam. After the lecture, there is a Q&A session with questions from the viewers.
