Lecture: World Cup - Commercializing Sin
On the 5th of June SIB will organize a lecture on the World Cup in Brazil this summer. What is the impact on the social stability of the region involved? The event comes with opportunities for the Brazilian economy, but it also has its downsides such as corruption, protests and crime. Is Brazil ready to organize an event like this and is it worth the alleged economic stimulus for the country? This lecture will focus on the political and social situation in Brazil and the effect the World Cup will have on this.Our guests this evening will be Nicole Sprokel and Marijn Poels.Nicole Sprokel works at Amnesty International. She tries to raise awareness about the violation of human rights that occur during big sport events. She will talk about the situation in Brazil and how Amnesty is trying to help the victims of these violations.Our second guest will be Marijn Poels, who has made a documentary which shows the actions of the government of Brazil, who wanted to present a ‘clean city’ to the world.
