How do you practice your Human Rights? And most importantly, how do you protect them?
SIB is on a mission to find out! On this topic, the CIA lecture committee organizes a series of dialogues on the topic of Human Rights. Although everyone is stuck in their student rooms, we take you with us to travel to explore the Human Rights situation everywhere in the world!
In our first lecture of this series, we take you to Poland. Despite being part of the European Union, several NGOs have published alarming reports about Human Rights violations in Poland. According to Human Rights Watch, the government actively undermines the rule of law and human rights protection and curbs free expression and assembly. Amnesty International reports that the government continued to implement legal and policy changes that undermined the independence of the judiciary. And even the European Union has published a series of alarming reports on deteriorating Women Rights, Abortion Rights, and the stigmatisation of LGBTI+ people. As a response, millions of Polish people took on the streets to defend their rights.
In this lecture, we talk with Maciej Rakowski, a Polish lawyer specialized in Human Rights and constitutional law. Together we will talk about the situation in Poland, and how it will change in the future.
