Gender Equality in Foreign Policy Making

  • SIB Amsterdam 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht Amsterdam, NH, 1018 WV Netherlands (map)

A few months ago a letter was signed by people working in the Dutch Foreign Ministry appealing for gender equality at the top of the ministry. While the goal of the Dutch Foreign Ministry is to appoint as many women as men to top positions by 2025, at the moment only 25% of the top positions in the ministry is held by women. Despite years of a positive policy push toward more women on top, this objective of 50% by 2025 seems to be out of reach. What is going wrong at the ministry? Why are so many (top) positions still awarded to men? And what needs to be done to change this?

On this topic, SIB Amsterdam and HeforShe UvA are organizing a panel discussion. During this panel discussion, we will explore the causes and consequences of gender inequality in foreign policy making, at the ministry, but also at various embassies around the world. The speakers for this event will be announced later this week, so keep an eye on our socials. All speakers will shine light on this topic, and will be ready to answer your questions.

The event takes place on Tuesday May 24th from 19:00 to 21:00 at the UvA Roeterseiland campus, lecture hall C0.01. This event is open for everyone. Make sure to sign up for this event on our website.
