Afghanistan: the current crisis

  • SIB Amsterdam 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht Amsterdam, NH, 1018 WV Netherlands (map)

After 20 years of the intervention of the US and NATO allies in Afghanistan, the country collapsed overnight after the withdrawal of the US and NATO Allies troops. The Taliban group has taken over the country and has been establishing its government. The humanitarian crisis and violations of human rights are currently unfolding and rising in Afghanistan. Why could the Afghan army not uphold and feel down so quickly after the withdrawal of the foreign troops? What can be expected from the new Taliban government and what future for Afghanistan as a state?

To reflect upon these questions, we invited Dr Omar Samad, the Senior Advisor of the Chief Executive of Afghanistan and the former Ambassador of Afghanistan, to give a lecture on the current situation in Afghanistan.

The CIA would like to invite all students, SIB members and non-members to join in these reflections on October 25th at the University of Amsterdam from 20:00 to 22:00. The lecture will be held online since Dr Samad is currently in the US but we will livestream the event at the UvA so that we can all watch it together.
